A reconnaissance geochemical survey carried out in the Al Qunfudhah quadrangle, south of the Jiddah-Makkah area, has resulted in the identification of eight Priority 1 anomalies, seven Priority 2 anomalies and nine Priority 3 anomalies that are potentially favorable for base-metal, precious-metal, Fe-Ti, and rare-element mineralization. The survey was based on the collection of 400 stream-sediment samples over Late Proterozoic intrusive rocks and supracrustal basement terrain, followed by ICP-OES and AAS analysis of the -2 mm / +0.177 mm fraction for 55 major and trace elements after HF/ HClO4/ HCl/ HNO3 digestion.
In addition to the identified regions of high element concentration being of potential interest to mineral exploration companies, the survey has made a significant contribution to a high-quality geochemical database suitable for environmental monitoring, geological mapping, and land-use planning.
